The single biggest difference between a disappointing AI image and a jaw-dropping one usually isn't the model — it's the prompt. A good prompt tells the AI exactly what to draw, in what style, with what mood and detail. The good news: writing strong prompts is a skill anyone can learn in about ten minutes.

The 5-part prompt formula
Almost every great image prompt is built from five ingredients. You don't always need all five, but the more you include, the more control you get:
- Subject — what's in the picture (a fox, a woman, a sneaker).
- Scene / setting — where it is, and what it's doing (sitting on a windowsill at sunrise).
- Style — the visual look (watercolor, 3D render, cyberpunk, oil painting, photorealistic).
- Light & mood — soft morning light, neon glow, dramatic shadows, dreamy.
- Detail & quality — ultra-detailed, high resolution, 8k, sharp focus.
Subject + Scene + Style + Light/Mood + Detail = a prompt that works.

Be specific — vague prompts get vague images
"A dog" could be anything. "A fluffy golden retriever puppy sitting in a field of daisies, warm afternoon sunlight, shallow depth of field, photorealistic" gives the AI something to aim at. Specificity is the cheapest upgrade you can make.
Swap weak words for vivid ones: instead of "nice" or "beautiful," describe what makes it nice — the color palette, the texture, the time of day.
Use style keywords on purpose
Style words steer the whole image. A few reliable ones:
- Photorealistic / cinematic — lifelike photos and film-like scenes.
- Anime / illustration — clean, stylized, character-friendly.
- 3D render / Pixar-style — glossy, dimensional, playful.
- Watercolor / oil painting / ink wash — artistic, textured, hand-made feel.
- Cyberpunk / vaporwave — moody neon palettes.

Set the composition and aspect ratio
Tell the AI how to frame the shot: close-up portrait, wide landscape, top-down flat lay, full body. Then match the aspect ratio to where the image will live — square for avatars, 9:16 for phone wallpapers and stories, 16:9 for blog headers and banners.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Overstuffing. Twenty competing ideas confuse the model. Keep one clear subject.
- Contradictions. "Minimalist but highly ornate" pulls in two directions.
- Forgetting the mood. Lighting and atmosphere are what make an image feel finished.
- Wrong aspect ratio. A square image cropped into a banner loses its best part.
